I woke up this morning smiling with the warm afterglow of a really nice evening. And no, i'm not going to go into details. I will say I did not want it to end, since things were starting to get really interesting. :-)

While i'm sitting at my computer, trying to wake up ( i.e. waiting for this RedBull to kick in), I notice a lot of network activity. Being the slightly paranoid Unix/Mac guy I am, i pop open my console, and see:

(slightly modified for web page formatting)

12/21/07 09:49:23 AM com.apple.SecurityServer[21] getpwnam() failed for user king Failed to authorize. 12/21/07 09:49:25 AM com.apple.SecurityServer[21] getpwnam() failed for user winamp Failed to authorize. 12/21/07 09:49:27 AM com.apple.SecurityServer[21] getpwnam() failed for user alpha Failed to authorize. 12/21/07 09:49:29 AM com.apple.SecurityServer[21] getpwnam() failed for user omega Failed to authorize. 12/21/07 09:49:31 AM com.apple.SecurityServer[21] getpwnam() failed for user vinnie Failed to authorize. 12/21/07 09:49:34 AM com.apple.SecurityServer[21] getpwnam() failed for user vladimir Failed to authorize.

Woot! Somebody's trying to haxor my system! I do a little research, and find out they're in Italy. If it was any other day, i would probably launch a counterattck, and try to block them from attacking other, less secure people (*cough* windows xp *cough* ). Today, however, I've just got too much on my mind. I block their IP, and move on to something more interesting.

Like this! Sent to me from a high-school friend of mine. It's an a capella mens group from Indiana University, singing a "humorous rendition of the Twelve Days of Christmas that takes some surprising turns". originally linked from Coffee Klatch

I am an avid Mac user, and *nix user, but I have to point out that Apple has released far more security patches for vulnerabilities this year than Microsoft. As a vulnerability researcher, Apple is a bitch to work with as well ugh! I do get a kick out of watching people knock on my front door. The lil ASA keeps em knockin...

OH, yeah. Totally! I know the Mac isn't nearly as secure as Apple (and the other Mac fanboys) would have us believe. And I do count myself as a Mac Fanboy; I've been using Apple computers since 1982, and Mac's since '84.

I think the thing that struck me the most, was the names that they were probing for. That's a very very small snippet, too, but a lot of them are like that. "Omega" and "Alpha" and "king" and the like :-)

Agreed, I caught those as well, and noticed the interesting name attempts hehe.
